Miqlat
offers an excellent opportunity to a few poor Christian youth leaders
to reach their full potential. A group of young men and women initially
give a year of their lives to the service of Christ. Coming from poor
and needy families from across Southern Africa, team members are not able
to contribute towards their expenses. To be selected they must have passed
Matric, they must be Christians with a calling to serve God for at least
a year, and they must show strong leadership characteristics. They undergo
an intensive ministry and leadership training program with a foundation
of life skills and which also includes drama, music and dance skills.
Working
with youths in schools, churches and on farms across the Western Cape,
the Team uses the Word of God and the tools of music, dance and drama
to teach life skills and Christian values to help in the battle against
problems such as HIV/AIDS, crime and poverty. Their outreaches extend
to other parts of South Africa and neighboring countries once they are
sufficiently skilled. Some of the team members
become the mentors for new recruits in subsequent years and in staying
on also use the opportunity to study for a formal degree accredited through
UNISA. The ultimate goal of Miqlat with the Dream Team is a new generation
of Christian leaders from poor communities, to return inspired people
that have hope and fulfill their God-given potential.
The Dream Team currently has 26 members. Miqlat has
decided to restrict the total number of Dream Team members to 30 for the
foreseeable future, mainly due to budgetary constraints. They are being
supervised by 4 members of the permanent Miqlat staff, one off which spends
all her time with them, while the other three are involved with some of
the programs. We also rely significantly on volunteers to provide selected
skills training. |
